After Monsieur Levasseur came back down in real clothes, he gave Cesar instructions on exactly where to teleport, and the two of them got us to the edge of the forest. Since it wasn’t such a large distance, they didn’t need to use my magic.

“Um, we didn’t exactly account for searching through the forest in the middle of the night, did we?” Eli asked with a frown.

The moonlight washed through the trees to provide a slight blanket of light over the forest, but not much. From what I could see, it looked like most of the trees were thin enough to wrap one arm all the way around them, but they were all tall. There were a few thicker ones near the footpath leading into the forest. I could see about twenty-five or thirty feet down the path.

“How are we going to find anything?” Brayson asked, keeping close by my side.

“Repeat after me,” Levasseur said. “Vĩsum nocturnus.”

“Vĩsum nocturnus,” I said, along with everyone else. Once the words left my lips, I blinked, and everything changed. It was like out of nowhere, a light source had formed. I could see everything around me in clear detail, despite everything being dark. It was still night, but it almost looked like a scene in a video game, with the light blue tint to the world over high resolution. “Wow…”

“This is incredible,” Oliver muttered, blinking through his new night vision. “I’ll definitely be using this.”

“It should last until you repeat the incantation,” Levasseur noted. “Samson will be fine. He has night vision already.”

“Alright,” I nodded, stepping down the footpath. “Let’s go.”

“Henri?” Cesar began as we followed the dirt road. “I don’t understand. This forest has tourist attractions, and humans are here all the time. How do they keep from getting lost?”

“Mages,” Levasseur said as he walked in front of us. “Every tour guide for the Paimpont Forest is a mage. They’ve navigated very carefully exactly how to get to the landmarks without crossing through the other dimensions. Or if they do cross through, they at least find their way out.”

“So then following these footpaths is a bad idea, right?” I blinked. “Since the landmarks definitely aren’t what we’re looking for?”

“Oui,” Levasseur nodded, pausing in the middle of the dirt path. “I’m looking for… I think that’s it.”

He turned and passed between two trees off the path, so we were now walking over the grass.

“Be very careful,” he warned. “These portals where they overlap are invisible.”

“Where are we going?” Silas asked.

“When I was young, I got lost in here for a whole day,” Levasseur said. Once in a while, he would slow to a stop and reach into the air before him, then stretch over to look at his arm from the side, as if he thought he could see his arm disappear into another dimension. “I’m trying to retrace my steps. It would be a start, at least.”

We followed him closely in a clump. I held Brayson’s hand as we walked and struggled to keep from digging my nails into his hand from nerves.
